Things to do in our area

Dekorra is nestled within rolling, wooded hills, farmland and pastures. The Wisconsin River threads its way peacefully through our town, expanding shores along its path forming Lake Wisconsin.

Dekorra’s location within these natural resources makes it “Beautifully Situated” for families and singles (young or old) to explore year-round recreational activities. Whether you are a resident or a lucky visitor, Dekorra’s four seasons of recreation offer fishing, boating, hunting, camping, hiking, snowmobiling, shopping, dining, and so much more.

Lake Wisconsin’s 10,000 acres of water and 52 miles of shoreline combined with the Wisconsin River have plenty to offer. In addition to excellent fishing, they provide the opportunity to participate in water and winter sports, always surrounded by beautiful scenery. Thousands of people swim and picnic on the river and its sandbars every summer. They depict the Indian word ”Dekorra” which means “The gathering place.”

Some areas of the river have deep pools and strong current. Approach the river with respect and care. There are many Town-owned parks and boat launches allowing access to the lake and river. Several merchants located on the lake and river offer dining, lodging, watercraft rentals, and entertainment.

The MacKenzie Environmental Education Center (MEEC) offers visitors one of the most diverse environmental education centers in Wisconsin. The 250-acre center features a variety of habitat types including prairie and forest land. It’s a wonderful place for a hands-on outdoor experience.

The center includes a live wildlife exhibit, self-guided nature trails, museums, a fire tower, large picnic area, lodge, and dormitories. The MEEC is operated and managed by the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation through a unique partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Friends of the MacKenzie Center. Admission is free to the general public and donations are greatly appreciated.

Dekorra Public Hunting Grounds is a 225 acre property consisting of approximately 15 acres of wetland, 45 acres of upland, and 165 wooded acres. This public hunting ground was established to provide the public with additional hunting and recreating opportunities as well as preserving habitat for wildlife.

The “Midsummer Nights in Dekorra” celebration features the biggest little fireworks show in the area. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy the activities and concessions. Located on the corner of Hall and McMillan Roads (search internet mapping using Hall and McMillan Rd., Poynette, WI), this event takes place annually in mid- to late July.

The neighboring municipalities of Lodi and Poynette offer a variety of activities, including organized youth and adult sports and recreation, golfing, swimming pools, city wide garage sale days, farmers’ markets, shopping, and public libraries.

We hope this site helps you explore, find, and experience all that Dekorra and our surrounding communities have to offer. Like those of us who live here, we know that if you come to visit or to relocate, you’ll truly appreciate that we are “Beautifully Situated.”
